Asaase Foundation donates GHC20,000 for treatment of 15-year-old girl suffering from bone cancer

Michaela Asrifi, 15, was expected to write the just ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) but was unable to due to her condition

The Asaase Foundation – established to drive corporate social responsibility initiatives for Asaase Broadcasting Company – has donated GHC20,000, to help fund the treatment of 15-year-old Michaela Asirifi, who is suffering from mesenchymal chondrosarcoma, a form of bone cancer.

Her treatment process will include surgery, chemotherapy and supportive care. Medical professionals say the whole treatment will cost GHC80,000.

Asirifi’s guardian, Juliana Asante told Asaase News that, “at the moment we are waiting for funds to be able tp perform the surgery for her.”

“The total surgery cost is about GHC80,000 and this is going to really help us raise the money for the surgery,” she added.

Asante added: “Without the surgery, she is still in pain a lot of times; crying all the time and she can’t be in school. She was supposed to write BECE this year but couldn’t… we are really grateful to Asaase Foundation for this.”

Naa Martey Martey, a nurse with the Oncology department of the Korlebu Teaching Hospital explained to Asaase News how the donation would aid Michaela’s treatment.

“The treatment for her condition is surgery. With this money, she is going to undergo her surgery and this is going to help her in the treatment.”

The family is still appealing to more stakeholders and Ghanaians to come to their aid.

“It will cover the cost of the surgery and some of the medication she might need for the surgery,” Martey said.
