Asantehene charges Lands Minister to tackle illegal mining menace

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has implored Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, to take a relook at the illegal mining menace and deal with it.

He made the appeal when Jinapor paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi Thursday.

According to Otumfuo, there was the need to regulate the activities of small-scale miners so as to protect the country’s water bodies and environment. For him, intensifying the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, was the right way to go.

The Asantehene was also concerned with the way land administration was being managed in the country. He wants the ministry to formulate the right policies to manage land administration in Ghana.

Jinapor was at the Manhyia Palace as part of a two-day tour of the region. Speaking to journalists after the meeting he said the government is reviewing the strategy on fighting illegal small scale mining in the country.

According to him, government is set to have a national consultative discussion to come out with a roadmap on tackling issues of illegal mining.
