Ashanti Region: Krobea Asante TVET School closed down over riot

The students reportedly launched the attack to protest poor results recorded by their predecessors in an examination

The Ashanti regional security council has ordered the immediate closure of the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational School after some students went on a rampage Sunday.

The students reportedly launched the attack to protest poor results recorded by their predecessors in an exams supervised by the National Board for Professional and Technician Examinations (NABPTEX).

Although authorities are yet to establish this claim, the incident has led to the destruction of some properties including vehicles, notice boards and other installations.

“The regional security council has taken assessment of the situation and per the briefing and advice the school environment wouldn’t be safe for teaching and learning and so the school has been shut down,” said a deputy spokesperson for the education ministry Opoku Mensah Yaw.

“For now investigations have started, there has been some arrest and since this is a security matter. The school is under TVET service and so that fold will have to work on a report and submit to the regional education directorate and that process has started,” he added.

Education authorities have already visited the school, located in the Sekyere East District town of Asokore, to assess the situation. Security has since been beefed up to avert any planned attack.

This development adds to several student riots and protests recorded in parts of the Ashanti Region.

On Tuesday, 13 December 2022 seven students of the Islamic Senior High School were arrested for allegedly rioting and vandalising properties belonging to the Asanteman Senior High School in Kumasi.
