Kofi Adu Amoateng replaces Yaw Danso, who was axed over his involvement in illegal mining alings linked to illegal mining

Assembly members in the Bosome Freho District of the Ashanti Region have confirmed President Akufo-Addo’s nominee, Kofi Adu Amoateng as the new chief executive of the area.

He polled 22 out of the total 29 votes representing 75.9% after the first round of elections supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) on Wednesday (16 August).

Amoateng, a four-time secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party in the Bosome Freho Constituency was nominated by President Akufo-Addo on 28 July.

Background

The former DCE Yaw Danso was sacked in July over his alleged engagement in illegal mining

President Akufo-Addo fired him following the outcome of investigations into the issue. An audio recording in circulation allegedly implicated Danso in galamsey, a term commonly used in Ghana to refer to illegal mining activities.

Following the suspension, some assembly members in Bosome Freho called on the presidency to further investigate the allegations.

President Akufo-Addo had initially invited Danso to defend himself against the charges during a special meeting with MMDCEs.

In a letter to the Ashanti regional minister, Dan Botwe, the local government minister, stated, “His Excellency the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has relieved the chief executive of the Bosome Freho District Assembly, Mr Yaw Danso, of his position with immediate effect.”

The letter also emphasised that the decision was taken due to the serious allegations of illegal mining against Danso.
