Austin Gamey to government: Scrap certain positions to cut down cost

The labour authority is suggesting to the government to scrap certain positions where there are large numbers of appointees to cut down on its expenditure

The Labour expert, Austin Gamey has said the government must scrap certain public positions to cut down on expenditure.

“There are large numbers of government appointees including some ministers, including some areas with two, three deputies and so on. They should find a way of addressing them so that they can convince the workers,” Gamey told Asaase News

Gamey has attributed the recent agitations from the teacher unions on lack of communication from the government.

“But people are equally worried about their tomorrow that is their pension. Their pension is at the uppermost part of their mind.”

Speaking with Asaase News, he said the labour law mandates the government to keep the communication channels with the unions active at all times, but that appears to have failed leading to the labour unrest.

“Even the law indicates you join the employer to have an open dialogue with the workers in a transparent manner and so government needs to tell them why they can not transfer the money, now that way, they will empathise with them like in 2015. I empathise with both parties but we need to salvage our country,” Gamey said.

However, some health workers are also threatening to join the ongoing strike by the teachers to demand the payment of cost-of living allowance (COLA).
