World Bank expresses confidence in Ghana’s economy

The World Bank Group has expressed optimism in President Akufo-Addo's leadership to turn things around for the country

The World Bank Group has expressed confidence in President Akufo-Addo’s government to turn things around despite the country’s current economic challenges.

Speaking at the launch of a grant for SMEs in Accra, Pierre Laporte, the country director of the World Bank said Ghana holds a huge potential to become a leader of effective development in Africa.

“In the World Bank, we have a target to try to disburse at least 20% of our portfolio during a single year. This year we did close to 23% above our target. A World Bank support to Ghana at this level is testimony to the belief we have in this country. We believe strongly that Ghana holds huge potential to get to effective development in Africa.”

“Despite the current micro fiscal challenges, we are confident that Ghana will rise through it…. but we have full confidence in the leadership of President Akufo-Addo. Ghana will turn the economy around,” he added

“Permanent deal”

Meanwhile, the editor of the Finder Newspaper, Elvis Darko is urging the government to negotiate a permanent programme from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Speaking with Wilberforce Asare on Asaase’ Radio’s Press Pass programme on Wednesday (6 July) Darko said “It’s about time we made people believe that we can decide that for the next 10 years. We should be in a permanent IMF bailout programme. We can make like maybe GHC20 billion from IMF in the next 10 years. And those monies because it takes long to pay back, we invest in critical sectors of the economy that will create the future that we all dream today.”
