The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has identified 38 flood-prone areas in the Bono Region.
Sixteen of the zones are in the Sunyani municipality with the remaining 12 dotted in the other districts.
According to the deputy director of NADMO in charge of finance and administration, Ernest Osei Kwaku, said plans are far advanced to raise awareness among residents of such areas.
“During this period, what we are doing now is preparing and sensitising the minds of the public about possible floods,” Osei told Asaase News while outlining plans to avert disaster in the region as the rains set in.
“We have gone rounds and identified some areas which we term as flood-prone areas in almost all the 12 municipalities and districts in region. We are now going to erect sign post to caution people that these areas are flood-prone areas and it’s better for them to relocate if you find yourself in such areas,” he said.
Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital is gradually losing its reputation as the cleanest city in Ghana. A situation that can be attributed to residents’ failure to appreciate the need to keep their surroundings clean and city authorities shirking their responsibilities.
Drains in front of residential apartments and businesses are choked with filth, especially plastic bags and bottles carelessly disposed off. As the rains set in, NADMO said they are sensitising locals about the dangers of the menace.
He said between January and March this year about 1,263 persons have been affected by disasters in the region with valuables estimated at GHC2,730,500 lost.
