Bibiani is very calm now after clashes, says minister

Speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (21 July), the Western North Regional Minister said he would meet with both sides today to address the issue

Calm has returned to Bibiani in the Western North Region after a misunderstanding between traditional leaders and youth groups in the area over a ritual.

Earlier reports suggested that two people had been hit by stray bullets following clashes on Wednesday which were triggered by friction between the two sides.

Speaking with Benjamin Offei-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (21 July 2022), the Western North Regional Minister, Richard “Rocky” Joojo Obeng, said he would meet with both sides later in the day to address the matter.

“As I speak to you now, there is a general sense of calm that has returned to the Bibiani area,” Obeng said.

“This morning, we are turning ourselves into a quasi-court of humble jurists to sit and further dialogue just so that we secure the best of relations between the traditional authorities and the youth groups.”

Obeng added, “As the minister and caretaker of the Bibiani Municipal Assembly, my job is to create peace and that is what I have worked towards … to ensure that the incident that occurred yesterday does not happen again.

“All those who acted in some manner of intransigence will face the laws and processes that are required of such persons. As I speak to you now, there is a general sense of calm that has returned to Bibiani and its enclaves,” he said.

The minister had earlier told Asaase News that the incident was not related to mining.
