Black Bombers reignite Olympic qualification hopes

Light welterweight Joseph "Jaguar" Commey, who stepped in for Olympic bronze medalist Samuel "Ring Warrior" Takyi, is now just three wins away from booking his ticket to Paris

After a shaky start to their campaign at the World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers in Bangkok, Thailand, Ghana’s Black Bombers have found their footing with two boxers securing victories on Sunday (26 May).

The qualifiers serve as the team’s final shot at securing a place at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Light welterweight Joseph “Jaguar” Commey, who stepped in for Olympic bronze medalist Samuel “Ring Warrior” Takyi, received a walkover win after his opponent, Bajoku Shpetim of Kosovo, withdrew from the competition.

This puts Commey just three wins away from booking his ticket to Paris.

Also finding success was Ghanaian light middleweight Henry Malm. Malm dominated his bout against Libya’s Mohammed Bilrrashid, securing a convincing 5-0 unanimous points decision victory and advancing to the round of 32.

The Black Bombers’ quest continues with heavyweight Jonathan Tetteh facing a tough challenge against Azerbaijan’s Dominguez Loren Berto.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s lone female representative, Oneilla Sathoud, will be looking to land some blows of her own when she squares off against Czech fighter Langerova Monika in the women’s middleweight category.

Both Tetteh and Sathoud will be stepping into the ring during the evening session at the Hua Mak Indoor Stadium. The World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers are scheduled to run until Sunday (2 June).

Ghana has a strong boxing pedigree, and missing out on the Olympics would be a significant blow, as the Black Bombers haven’t failed to qualify for the Games since 2004.

All eyes will be on Tetteh, Sathoud, and the remaining boxers to deliver knockout performances and secure their spots in Paris.
