Black Bombers to know opponents ahead of final Olympic qualifier

Failure to qualify in Bangkok would mark the first time since 2004 that Ghana hasn’t sent boxers to the Olympic Games

Ghana’s national boxing team, the Black Bombers, have their gloves on and sights set on securing qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games at the World Olympic Boxing Qualifier in Bangkok, Thailand.

The high-stakes tournament kicks off on Friday (24 May) and runs until Sunday (2 June), at the Hua Mak Indoor Stadium. It’s the Black Bombers’ last chance to punch their ticket to Paris.

A total of 578 boxers from 132 National Olympic Committees and the Boxing Refugee Team will vie for the remaining 51 Olympic places across 13 weight categories.

The six-person Black Bombers team, led by head coach Ofori Asare, will be among them, facing off against opponents determined in Thursday’s (23 May) draw.

Here’s a breakdown of the Black Bombers’ upcoming bouts:

  • Friday (24 May) (Evening session): Amadu Mohammed (Ghana) vs. De Lo Santos Felix Jose Luis (Dominican Republic)—Bout No. 43 (Featherweight)
  • Saturday (25 May) (Afternoon session): Mark Kojovi Ahondjo (Ghana) vs. St. Pierre Kennedy Joseph (Mauritius)—Bout No. 68 (Super Heavyweight)
  • Saturday (25 May) (Evening session): Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey (Ghana) vs. Bernath Attila (Hungary)—Bout No. 82 (Flyweight)
  • Sunday (26 May) (Afternoon session): Joseph Commey (Ghana) vs. Bajoku Shpetim (Kosovo)—Bout No. 102 (Light Welterweight)
  • Sunday (26 May) (Evening session): Henry Malm (Ghana) vs. Bilrrashid Mohammed (Libya)—Bout No. 139 (Light Middleweight)
  • Monday (27 May) (Evening session): Jonathan Tetteh (Ghana) vs. Dominguez Loren Berto (Azerbaijan)—Bout No. 192 (Heavyweight)
  • Monday (27 May) (Evening session): Oneilla Sathoud (Ghana) vs Langerova Monika (Czech Republic)—Bout No. 200 (Women’s Middleweight)

All eyes are on the Black Bombers as they fight for a place on the Olympic stage. Failure to qualify in Bangkok would mark the first time since 2004 that Ghana hasn’t sent boxers to the Olympic Games.
