Ablakwa questions role of special assistant to OSP at the presidency

The opposition lawmaker alleges that the special assistant is being paid from the presidency at the time when the Special Prosecutor is owed about 16-month salary arrears

The MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has questioned the role of a special assistant to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) at the Office of the President.

The opposition lawmaker alleges that the special assistant is being paid from the presidency at the time when the Special Prosecutor is owed about 16-month salary arrears.

The government is yet to officially respond to Ablakwa’s claim.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday (28 February), Ablakwa said the development does not protect the independence of the OSP.

“Is Ghana’s Special Prosecutor aware that there’s someone listed amongst the legion of political appointees at the Akufo-Addo Presidency described as “Special Assistant, Office of the Special Prosecutor?” Ablakwa asked on Facebook.

“Why is a Special Assistant at the Office of the Special Prosecutor classified as a Political Appointee at the Presidency?”

“Why is this Special Assistant being paid from the Presidency, particularly when Parliament discovered last December that his boss, the OSP has not been paid for an incredible 16 months? How does this development help protect the independence of the Office of Special Prosecutor?” Ablakwa further asked..
