Burkina Faso: BBC and VOA programmes suspended for two weeks

Burkina Faso suspends BBC and VOA for relaying a Human Rights Watch article that claims the West African country's army's atrocities.

Burkina Faso has suspended the BBC Africa and Voice of America (VOA) for two weeks.

According to the Burkina Faso Information Agency(AIB), the Superior Council of Communication (CSC) the two international media houses were suspended Thursday ( 25 April) for two weeks for having relayed an article from Human Rights Watch (HRW) on an alleged massacre of civilians by the Burkinabè army.

In addition, the CSC ordered the suspension of access to the websites of BBC, VOA, and HRW from Burkinabe territory.

Finally, the CSC invited the Burkinabè media not to repeat the HRW press release.

The article “Burkina Faso: Army Massacres 223 Villagers” was published on the Human Rights Watch website on Thursday (25 April).

According to the Human Rights Watch article, the Burkina Faso military summarily executed at least 223 civilians, including at least 56 children, in two villages on 25 February, 2024.

The HRW urged authorities to undertake a thorough investigation into the massacres, with support from the African Union and the United Nations.
