COCOBOD gets GHC64 million to establish coffee and shea division

COCOBOD will receive funding to establish a coffee and shea division to improve production of these cash crops

Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is expected to receive GHC64 million seed money to establish a coffee and shea division, the caretaker finance minister, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has announced.

The move is part of a broader plan to revolutionise the coffee sector to consolidate recent gains made through the government’s coffee development programmes, propelling coffee to a status similar to the one enjoyed by cocoa in Ghana.

Presenting the 2021 Budget Statement and Economic Policy in Parliament on Friday 12 March 2021, on the theme “Completion, Consolidation and Continuation”, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the move shows the government’s commitment to the sector.

“The government remains committed to the sustainable development of the coffee and shea sectors. To this end, COCOBOD continues to implement programmes for the revitalisation of the coffee and shea sectors,” he said.

Initial funding

The minister added: “In order to strengthen implementation of interventions that will improve production and marketing of these commodities, COCOBOD is setting up a new division, called the Coffee and Shea Division (CSD) of COCOBOD, with an initial funding amount of GHC64 million.

“The new division will, among others, improve production of coffee and shea, through distribution of certified planting materials, expansion of extension delivery and other productivity enhancement support services.”
