Catholic bishop calls on Ghanaians to shun vote-buying politicians

Most Reverend Peter Paul Angkyier says politicians who want to buy their way into office do not deserve to be given the opportunity to lead the country

The Bishop of Damongo Diocese, Most Reverend Peter Paul Angkyier, has urged Ghanaians to ignore politicians whose intention is to buy their votes. He said such politicians usually are obsessed with money and are unfit to lead the country in any capacity.

Most Reverend Angkyier was speaking at a durbar in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region.

He advised Ghanaians to give their mandate to politicians who can work to change the fortune of the country for the better.

“I will never confirm anyone who is trying to buy vote, to use money to buy vote, that is not appropriate, that is the wrong way as a Christian,” Bishop Angkyier said

“For me, the end does not justify the means, use good means with dignity and everybody will see you deserve to be voted and the people will decide,” he said.

Insult-free campaigning

He also called on the various political parties to ensure that they run clean campaigns ahead of the 7 December polls.

Bishop Angkyier said that politicians must avoid insults and personal attacks because they do not speak well of Ghana’s democracy.

He said peace is the foundation of a country’s development and political parties must be decent in their language throughout the campaign period.

“For me, peace is everything. I agree that we have different political aspirations but you know the church in its social teachings does not believe the fact that the end justifies the means,” he said.

“So, as a Christian and a Christian politician, I will expect people to do their politicking respecting the religious values. If you want to do things, do things using the right strategies and the right means.”

Call for prayer and inclusiveness

Most Reverend Angkyier admonished Ghanaians to pray for a peaceful election in December.

He advised the people of the Savannah Region to develop the habit of integrating settlers in their jurisdiction to enhance development.

He said residents who do not come from the region also have a big role to play when it comes to expertise in development.

Bishop Angkyier therefore urged traditional rulers in the Savannah Region to desist from tribal discrimination and accept everyone living in the region.
