Austin Gamey rejects calls for amendement of Ghana’s labour law

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday ( 2 May), Gamey stated that what is required is the implementation of the law, which is lacking

Austin Gamey, a labour consultant has rejected calls for a possible amendment of Ghana’s labour law to help address the concerns of workers.

Gamey’s comment was in reference to this year’s May Day celebration at Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region on the theme “protecting incomes and pensions in an era of economic crises: our responsibility.”

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday ( 2 May), Gamey stated that what is required is the implementation of the law, which is lacking.

He said, “The labour law itself cannot be touched, and it should not be touched because there is nothing in it to be changed.

“Everything that labour is requesting is in the law, the training, the tools, whatever they need is in Section 9 of the law. The productivity, you can get everything in Section 11… The ILO was here six times in making the law work.

“So clearly, we don’t need anything, what we need to do is to ensure that people honestly do their work… We need to train people to have the capacity to implement the law, which we don’t appear to have.”
