A huge sinkhole on a section of the ‘Dr Mensah’ enclave at the Kumasi Central market in the Ashanti Region has sparked public anger.
The sinkhole, which was discovered months ago has received little attention, exposing commuters to various hazards.
The part of the market where the pit is developing is a very busy trading area where drivers, traders and commuters compete for space daily.
Adu Boahen has been selling eggs at that part of the central market for years. He recounted how a commuter who was not aware of the pit fell into it.
“A small hole was discovered months ago. We tried filling it with tires, but it kept eating away creating this huge gulley. Even a woman fell into this pit.”
“It took some of us to rescue her. This is a very sad situation, to say the least,” Boahen said.
Commuters have accused city authorities of failing to fix the mess. “It is as if we don’t have city authorities here. Who is the urban roads director? Does he know his job? I doubt if he or she is aware of this,” a passerby angrily stated.
Another said, “We pay taxes to the wrong people. Until a disaster happens, nobody will pay attention to this. It’s like we are living in a jungle. This is so sad.”
The spot had been cordoned off when Asaase News visited the Kumasi Central market on Monday. Officials at the Department of Urban Roads in the Ashanti Region are yet to respond to calls for comments.
It is not clear whether their attention has been drawn to this development. However, the traders and drivers want this fixed to avoid what they describe as a looming disaster.
