Eight die in accident on Kumasi-Techiman highway

The incident occurred Wednesday morning (13 March) around 4am when a cargo car carrying frozen fish, with registration number GE-5097-23, lost control and collided head-on with a Yuntong bus

The death toll in a tragic accident that occurred at Nkenkensu on the Kumasi-Techiman highway has risen to eight, Asaase News has learned.

The incident was reported on Wednesday morning around 4am when a cargo car carrying frozen fish, with registration number GE-5097-23, lost control and collided head-on with a Yuntong bus. The bus was transporting passengers from Yendi to Kumasi at the time of the collision.

“My understanding is that eight people have been confirmed dead by the district hospital. Three are women and five are men. One of them got trapped in the process,” said Francis Awuah an assemblyman in the Offinso North District.

“The bodies have been deposited in the morgue while the surviving victims are receiving treatment. The scene is a curved area with deep potholes and normally when these heavy vehicles break down it takes a long time before they are cleared and this is a major issue on that stretch,” he added.

The road has since been cleared to traffic while police investigate the cause of the accident. It is the third accident reported in the district in the last three weeks with the major cases involving tricycles.

A disaster management coordinator in the Offinso North District in an interview with Asaase News called for “a nationwide review of protocols regarding the use of non-traditional transportation systems in the country”.
