Freddie Blay, the national chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the #FixTheCountry campaign is vile propaganda being pushed by the opponents of the government.
Several Ghanaians over the weekend took to Twitter to protest over what they describe as bad governance and the high cost of living in the country.
This follows an increase in fuel prices, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices as well as price for data and call.
But speaking on the Big Bulletin with Beatrice Adu on Wednesday (5 May), Blay said the governing NPP government will also brace itself up for it.
He said, “It’s opponents of the government that have started their campaign…But let’s face it, we will also brace ourselves for it and we should take them more seriously and react to some of the issues that they are putting out and alert Ghanaians so that they don’t get carried away by this vile propaganda”
Protest
Meanwhile, the brains behind the viral #FixTheCountry campaign on social media have served notice of a public protest slated for 9 May 2021.
In a notice to the police, the conveners said the protest is to draw the government’s attention to the unemployment situation in the country coupled with other unfulfilled promises.
“We write with reference to Section 1 of the Public Order Act (Act 491), which provides that any person who desires to hold any special event within the meaning of that Act in any public place shall notify the police of his intention not less than five days before the date of the special event,” the notice to the police said.
The organisers promised to take into consideration all COVID-19 protocols, adding they do not intend to present a petition to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Why 9 May?
According to them, they settled on 9 May for the protest because the day captures the restless spirit of over 126 Ghanaians who lost their lives in the 9 May 2001 Accra Sports Stadium Disaster due “to institutionalised incompetence and disregard for Ghanaian lives.”
Also, they said the day commemorates the 26th anniversary of the Kume Preko demonstration of 11 May 1995.
