GES to Wesley Girls: Allow Muslim students to fast

The Ghana Education Service (GES) says no school in the country should deny any Muslim student the right to fast

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed officials of the Wesley Girls Senior High School to allow Muslim students at the school to fast in the ongoing Ramadan.

It follows media reports suggesting the school had denied a Muslim student the right to fast as part of her religious principles.

A statement from the GES said all schools in the country should not deny students the right to fast.

“The minister advised the Ghana Education Service to put in place measures to address this matter bearing in mind the rights of students and concerns of the schools on the health risk associated with fasting,” the spokesperson of the GES, Cassandra Twum Ampofo, said in the statement.

“The Ghana Education Service therefore directs authorities of Wesley Girls High School as well as any other school to allow any such student who wishes to fast for any religious reason to do so.”

GES has, however, asked parents to sign undertaking that they will not hold the schools responsible for any adverse health implication as a result of the fasting.
