Bawku youth call for arrest of rival chief

The Nayiri, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, on Wednesday (15 February), installed a retired educationist as chief in Nalerigu to rival Naba Abugrago Azoka II

The Kusaug Youth Movement in Bawku has called for the immediate arrest of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, the rival Bawku Naba and all those behind his enskinment.

The Nayiri, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, on Wednesday (15 February), installed a retired educationist as chief in Nalerigu to rival Naba Abugrago Azoka II.

The enskinment, however, faced condemnation from the government which said it was a threat to national security.

Speaking at a news conference on Saturday (18 February), the youth movement described the enskinment as illegal and against the constitution of Ghana. It has therefore called for punitive action against the Nayiri and his kingmakers.

“What is clear is that the Nayiri committed an illegality against the state and on that basis… we call for the arrest  and prosecution of the Nayiri.

“Is the government telling Ghanaians that the state security agencies are incapable of locating the Nayiri and his elders as well as the impostor chief? We are surprised at the lackadaisical attitude of the government towards the enforcement of the law,” the spokesperson said.

The association commended the government for issuing a statement against the action of the Nayiri, but condemned the security agencies for failing to arrest the perpetrators nearly three days after the government issued the statement.

The group said it had taken a stand to apprehend the perpetrators and hand them to the security agencies to face the law.
