Ghana must move away from single-use plastic, says Plastic Punch boss

Speaking to Nana Yaa Mensah on the ABS, Richmond Quarcoo said addressing the plastic menace in Ghana requires an all-hands-on deck approach

Richmond Kennedy Quarcoo, the director at Plastic Punch, has suggested to beverage companies to consider the use of reusable bottles and move away from the single use plastics.

Speaking to Nana Yaa Mensah on the Asaase Breakfast Show on the occasion of World Environment Day on Monday (5 June), Quarcoo said addressing the plastic menace in Ghana requires an all-hands-on deck approach.

“We all have a role to play, the government has its role of providing infrastructure to aid recycling, reduction and reuse system,” he said.

“The business and industry need to stop hazardous plastic production and packaging must be designed out, especially single use plastic. Producers of beverages should do better, move to alternate source, there is glass, there are reusable options that they could opt for, other countries are doing it.”

Quarcoo added: “Cities and towns need to enact strict laws, for example when you go to Singapore, nobody can drop trash on the floor. So, these are the systems and ways looking at best practices around the world.”
