GIISDEC staff petitions governing board over chairman’s abuse of office

The Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) was Established by an Act of parliament in March, 2019 to develop and promote an Integrated Iron and Steel Industry

A member of staff of the Ghana Integrated Iron and steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) has petitioned the board of directors over what he says is the abuse of office by the board chairman, Farouk Aliu Mahama, son of late former Vice President in the Kufuor Administration, Alhaji Aliu Mahama and Member of Parliament (MP) for Yendi.

The petitioner, Patrick Nyarko, the director of corporate affairs & International Relations, in his petition contends that the board chairman, his assigns including his appointed Transaction Advisor and family members have through various forms of verbal and physical abuse, attacked him over what they claim is a failure in submitting a favourable recommendations for the acceptance of a GIISDEC “Master Plan” to the chief executive officer to authorise payment to the Consultants working on the GIISDECMASTER PLAN.

Contention of petitioner

Nyarko, who is the chairman of the committee overseeing the development of the “Master Plan”, notes that there is no deliberate attempt on the part of his committee to delay the development of the plan except to ensure that due process is followed and that all payments made are carried out within the confines of the law.

This position taken by Nyarko and his committee appears not to be the pleasure of the Board Chairman and some members of his family and has led to a direct order of the board chairman to the chief executive officer (Kwabena Bonsu Fordwor) to force  Patrick Nyarko to proceed on leave.

Whiles Mr Nyarko was on his forced leave, he was written to by the CEO that he is reassign from his current position as director of corporate affairs & International Relations to head the environment, health and safety department effective 8th March 2022, though Patrick Nyarko has no skills or training to manage such department and since his petition to the board, Mr. Nyarko has been receiving questioning and queries all in an attempt to constructively dismiss him from his job as a professional.

Interventions sought

To this end, the petitioner is seeking the intervention of the board of directors to collectively instruct the Board Chairman and his assignees to stop raining further verbal abuses on him.

Other reliefs he is seeking are “that the Board together with Management grant him a fair hearing on the matter”.

“That Management be compelled to rescind its decision directing him to proceed on leave as directed by the Board Chairman”.

“Management be restrained from carrying out its intended re-assignment as instructed by the Board Chairman under the guise that it is a GIISDEC board of directors decision”.

“That the Board Chairman be restrained from meddling in GIISDEC operational activities on a daily basis including who travels on official assignments for GIISDEC, who gets promoted to directorship position as it has just happened this month of February 2022 under the pretext of GIISDEC board o directors instruction to management for implementation”.

“GIISDEC BOARD review all appointments since the new board took over, including recent ones under the instructions of the Board Chairman with the pretext that it is the board of directors of GIISDEC’S instruction which the c CEO unfortunately obliged”.
“The Transaction Advisor contracted under the instructions of the board chairman should be looked at by the entire Board of GIISDEC to see whether financial prudence was adhered to.

The petitioner’s basis for seeking the listed reliefs among others is because GIISDEC is a new strategic public institution and that financial prudence must always be adhered to taking into consideration our scares resources since we are still under government subvention and not generating any income as at now.
