GIPC raises concern over encroachment by land guards

The investor services director of GIPC says it does not speak well of Ghana and drives investors away. “In our line of business, if credibility becomes an issue, it will be very difficult to sell your message. If the land is an issue, then I cannot sell the business opportunity to the investor”

The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) has said that it is concerned about land guards’ encroachment on land belonging to investors.

The director of the investor services division of GIPC, Edward Ashong Lartey, expressed this anxiety during a speech at a regional sensitisation forum organised by GIPC in the Ashanti Region.

“We need huge tracts of land, but then, we don’t want land guards wielding cutlasses and knives chasing investors away.”

According to Ashong Lartey, violent disputes over land do not speak well of Ghana and drive away investors. He added: “In our line of business, if credibility becomes an issue, it will be very difficult to sell your message. If the land is an issue, then I cannot sell the business opportunity to the investor.

“I encourage people with lands to make sure the land is properly registered.”

He urged local entrepreneurs in Asanteman to register their firms with GIPC to take advantage of all the incentives available, and also to help promote their businesses both locally and internationally.

Ashong Lartey further called on local officials to intervene to help resolve the land problem.

The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre registered 402 businesses in the Ashanti Region between 1994 and 2021. Ashanti placed second after Greater Accra over the same period.
