Ho: GNAT elects new executives, calls on stakeholders to be supportive

The union elected a new chairman, vice, treasurer, secretary, assistant youth coordinator, GNATLAS coordinator, second cycle and basic school representatives and educational administration representative

Members of the Asogli local union of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region elected new leaders on Wednesday 22 March.

The union elected a new chairman, vice, treasurer, secretary, assistant youth coordinator, GNATLAS coordinator, second cycle and basic school representatives and educational administration representative.

The Asogli local union of the GNAT is the largest local union of the association in Ghana with over 65 schools within the Asogli jurisdiction.

A incumbent chairman, Anthony Selorm Amegadzie, retained his seat. After the new executives were sworn into office, Amegadzie called on all teachers to join forces in order to achieve the purpose of GNAT.

He urged them to “work very hard so that we can uplift the image of education.” He is concerned that “education seems to be going down in the Volta Region. Unlike in the past when it was noted that the Volta Region is for education, things are [now] declining.

“So, I encourage teachers to give out their best even though they may complain their salaries are not good and they don’t have allowances. They should keep doing their best, their reward will never be in heaven it will be on earth.”

Amegadzie called on government to “look up to teachers. They should, at least give some allowances to teachers. There are risks in the work.” He said if teachers feel comfortable they will also work hard to the satisfaction of everyone.

He urged parents to get on board by providing learning materials to their wards and also make sure that they prioritise providing food to their children.

Local unions of GNAT hold conferences and elect new executives every two years.
