Asenso replies Kennedy: Stop causing disaffection, Bawumia will “Break the 8”

Francis Asenso Boakye described the claims of Kennedy Agyapong as a blatant lie, ludicrous, and politically puerile

Minister for Works and Housing and member of Parliament for the Bantama constituency in the Ashanti Region, Francis Asenso Boakye, has called out Kennedy Agyapong, to stop causing disaffection in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in his quest to win the party’s candidature.

Asenso Boakye also reiterated his firm believe that the sitting Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, remains the New Patriotic Party’s surest bet in its quest to win the 2024 elections and to realize the party’s vision of “Breaking the 8”.

Kennedy Agyapong, sitting member of Parliament for Assin Central constituency in the Central Region at a rally in Accra accused a minister of state who hails from Bantama in the Ashanti Region, of saying that the said minister has said somewhere that NPP should vote for the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and that if he does not win in 2024, he would become attractive to the Ghanaian electorate by 2028.

Ludicrous and politically puerile

In a post of his Facebook wall, Francis Asenso Boakye described the claims of Kennedy Agyapong as a blatant lie, ludicrous, and politically puerile, which should not be coming from a sitting MP and someone who seeks to lead the New Patriotic Party.

“My attention has been drawn to some regrettable remarks made by Hon Kennedy Agyepong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central and aspiring presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party at a rally held in Accra on Saturday, 16th September, 2023.

“The said remarks are to the effect that a certain minister of state from Bantama has told Delegates to vote for His Excellency, Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to be elected presidential candidate of the Party so as to become more attractive to Ghanaians after 4 years of H.E John Mahama’s imminent Presidency. Even though he did not explicitly mention my name (purposely), I’m currently the only minister of state from Bantama, so I reasonably assume he’s referring to me” Francis Asenso Boakye said in his Facebook post.

“This blatant lie is not only ludicrous, but also politically puerile. The NPP Government is deeply committed to working hard to improve the wellbeing of Ghanaians and by so doing, earn their continued goodwill. The false attribution by Hon Ken Agyepong is clearly a mischievous lie deliberately made with the sole intention to cause disaffection for me, sully my good standing within the Party and neutralize whatever leverage I have on the Delegates.

“My view on the NPP presidential primary is widely known to the party members and it’s that; Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is the extraordinary candidate that the NPP needs to break the ‘eight’. I urge all to disregard it and focus instead on building unity that will serve as the bedrock for winning the 2024 election” his post further read.

NPP 2024 victory

In his comments at the rally, Kennedy Agyapong is also quoted to have said; “The NPP lost the 2024 elections in 2022 when the Ghana cedi lost heavily to the United States dollar. Ghanaians made up their minds back then.

“So [they] know that NPP has already lost the 2024 elections and [they] are going round canvassing for votes from delegates, is that correct?  Delegates listen carefully and make your own decisions as the party is in your hands. A word to a wise is enough”.

The claims of Mr Agyapong have however been dismissed by several NPP supporters who indicate that a year is a long time in politics. They also explain that the whole world knows the challenges that world economies faced in 2022 and well-meaning Ghanaians knows the efforts being made by the Akufo-Addo government to restore the economy, which has begun yielding fruits.

“Across the democratic world,  governments are being judged by their electorates on how they have fixed in their respective countries, the economic crisis that hit the world and their programme to restore hope and growth and Ghanaians will do same” a member of the NPP told Asaase News on condition of anonymity.
