The Inspector-General of Police George Akuffo Dampare has once again challenged reports that rank the Ghana Police Service as the most corrupt institution in Ghana, insisting that such surveys are unfounded.
Corruption reports in Ghana by the Ghana Statistical Service, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and the Centre for Democratic Development all labeled the service as the most corrupt institution in Ghana.
The IGP challenged such reports and described them as selective ranking as he believes the research failed to cover some public institutions.
Speaking at a public lecture on Thursday at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in the Ashanti Region on effective policing, the police chief said the institution will not accept the corruption tag.
The theme of the lecture was: “The changing face of policing in Ghana: expectations and the role of the university community.”
According to the IGP, they cannot rule out the fact that some corrupt individuals exist in the police service, but “we will never accept the tag as the most corrupt institution in the country.”
Dampare challenged the methodology used in conducting the surveys.
“We will keep responding to them, but we will also keep working at the things that people over the years have used against us and make us feel so uncomfortable when it comes to the issue of corruption,” the police chief said.
