Police in the Western Indian state of Maharashtra have arrested 18-year-old teenager and his 38-year-old mother for allegedly attacking his pregnant older sister with a sickle.
The 19-year-old sister Kirti, eloped to marry Avinashi 21, without her family’s consent, local police officials said.
According to neighbours the sister married into a family poorer than theirs.
Police suspects the son took a selfie with the woman’s head. The brother was sent to a correctional facility for juvenile after his lawyers said he was not of legal age.
Assistant police commissioner, Kailash Prajapati said “we suspect that the mother son duo took a selfie with her head. We have sent the phone to the forensic lab to try and retrieve the photo’’
However, the police said they would contest this claim in court as a certificate found indicates him to be an adult. It is noted that hundreds of people are killed each year for falling in love or marrying against their families wishes, BBC reported.
