Issue of corruption is a national concern, says Supreme Court nominee

Justice George Kingsley Koomson said the issue of corruption should be discussed dispassionately so that the image of all public institutions can be redeemed

Supreme Court nominee, Justice George Kingsley Koomson, has said that the issue of corruption is a national concern that must be nipped in the bud.

Appearing before the appointments committee of Parliament on Tuesday (18 October 2022), the Appeal Court judge, who is being considered for the Supreme Court of Ghana, said: “The issue of corruption is a national concern … Almost all public institutions in this country are perceived to be corrupt … if all public institutions are corrupt, who corrupts these institutions? It is the people.

“It is an issue that we should be dispassionate about and find means of redeeming the image of all public institutions, not the judiciary alone.”

Contaminated by rumours

Justice Koomson added, “However, in the judiciary, we have rules and procedures to deal with corruption …It is sad that as a nation we’ve reached this level where every public institution in this country is being classified as being corrupt.

“We should be mindful that these things affect the investor confidence of country … a prosecutor who belongs to the Police Service may take money in the name of a judge, but it is deemed that the judge is corrupt when he has no idea about it.

“But that perception, when translated to reality, is very dangerous.”

But the judge also said, “Nobody disputes the fact that corruption exists in the judiciary, because there have been instances where some have been dismissed for corruption.”
