Jinapor: Mining and energy sectors must deepen capacity for local content

The Ghana Mining and Energy Summit has grown exponentially since the maiden event in 2013 and attracts industry participants from around the globe

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor has charged players in the mining and energy sector to prioritise building local capacities in a bid to enhance local content in their respective sectors.

Speaking at the official opening of the 5th Ghana Mining and Energy Summit in Accra on Wednesday (7 June), Jinapor said the government is poised to provide the needed leadership towards the realisation of local content in the mining and energy sectors.

“The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources remains committed to working with the Ministry of Energy to accelerate our efforts in renewable energy development.

“By diversifying our energy mix and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, we can mitigate the impact of climate change, create a resilient energy infrastructure, and provide affordable and reliable power to all our citizens, regardless of their location.

“It will be remiss on my part to conclude without mentioning the vexed issue of local content and local participation. It is in the interest of mining companies, and indeed, energy companies, to build local capacities, and, ultimately, indigenise these sectors. Government will continue to provide the needed leadership in this direction,” Jinapor said.
