K K Sarpong: Company boards need more women

The board chairman of GNPC says having women as board members enhances good corporate governance

Dr Kofi Kodua Sarpong, chief executive officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), is advocating the appointment of more women on boards of companies.

Speaking at the 5th CEO summit on the theme, “How to reset the Corporate Governance Agenda for a post pandemic economic resilience”, Dr Sarpong said the firm nature of women will ensure the growth of businesses.

“I would also like to emphasis the need to include a reasonable number of competent women on boards. They provide cautious approaches to issues and deliver their positions gracefully. They engage in pre-meeting consultations to generate consensus. They are not easily convinced to support motions that they do not believe in.”

Citing several women he had worked with on some boards including Nana Adwoa Hackman on the GNPC board, Dr. K.K Sarpong said women are asset in boardrooms.

“Based on my experiences generally, it is an asset for boardroom culture to have competent women. Their moderating influence when debates are heated.”

Digitisation

Also speaking on the need for boards to embrace digitisation amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Sarpong said boards must reset the digitisation agenda from the top and ensure that it is replicated by every department of the organisation.

“It has also been increasing clear that to run a productive and profitable business, digital transformation is critical under the current circumstances and beyond. There is no doubt that the corporate governance agenda should embrace digital transformation for businesses to achieve resilience.”

The 5th CEOs summit 2021, is a business conference which brought together CEOs, business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors and policy makers for high-impact learning, business opportunities and solutions, networking deals and dialogue with government.

The two-day event was on the theme, “Digital Transformation: Powering Business and Government Reset for a post-pandemic Economic Resilience. A public-private sector dialogue.”
