The Navrongo District Magistrate Court has granted bail in a combined sum of GHC28, 000 to seven accused persons, including a 17-year-old boy, standing trial in the recent Kajelo disturbances case.
The seven were each admitted to bail in the sum of GHC4, 000 with one surety to be justified.
This was after the lawyers for the accused persons prayed the court presided over by His Lordship Salem Kumah Gyata to grant their clients bail, arguing that the accused persons would not interfere with police investigations.
All the seven accused persons pleaded not guilty to the various charges including assault of a public officer, threat to a public officer and causing damage to property of a public officer.
The accused persons are; Kojo Abaduri, 29, Jono Adey, 48, Akuti Lirase, 29, and Atonwo Laagabi, 47.
The others are; Cletus Didongo, 27, Solomon Wobadi, 26, and Awe Awelan, 17.
Facts of the case
The brief facts of the case as presented to the court were that the seven accused persons together with other members of the Kajelo community in the Kassena-Nankana West District, on 16 November 2021, attacked police officers who had been detailed to a snap checkpoint in the area to ward off criminals.
The prosecution said the residents both young and old came out and beat up the police officers who were lawfully discharging their duties, destroyed police property and threatened to kill the officers.
According to the brief facts, the behaviour of the residents was in protest against the setting up of a police checkpoint in Kajelo.
It added that the officers in the face of the attack, however, acted professionally and did not use their firearms.
The brief facts noted that the police acting on intelligence picked up the suspects on 18 November 18 2021 with the support of officers from Bolgatanga and processed them for court.
The case has been adjourned to 10 December 2021.
