Traders whose shops were not affected by last Wednesday’s fire at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region can reopen their shops on Tuesday (21 March) and do not have to wait for a week as announced by the facility managers.
This intervention by Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia settles growing anxiety among traders who have kicked against a decision for the facility to remain closed for a week to allow for thorough investigations and repair works.
“It is clear that you are not doing business because of this incident,” Bawumia said on Monday (20 March ) when he visited the market. “But after speaking with personnel from the fire service, the market will be reopened for trading activities tomorrow (Tuesday).”
The market was shutdown after fire tore through several shops last Wednesday (15 March 2023), destroying properties worth millions of cedis.
Bawumia pledged the government’s support for the affected victims.
The traders, on their part were grateful to Bawumia for the swift intervention.
The president of the Kejetia Petty Traders Association Nana Prempeh also pleaded with the government to ensure that funds are made available for work to resume on phase II of the Kejetia Market project.
NPP donates GHC100,000 to traders
Meanwhile, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has sympathised with the traders following the fire incident and has made a cash donation of GHC100,000 to the affected persons.
Investigations have established that the fire was caused by a naked fire from a gas cylinder.
