The management of Kumasi City Market Ltd (KCML) and leadership of the traders’ union have unanimously resolved to address all concerns at the Kejetia Market Complex including the installation of individual meters in the trading hub.
This decision arose after a series of meetings in response to the traders’ planned demonstration against managers of the facility.
The agreed-upon course of action entails preliminary preparations for meter installation, inspections conducted by the Energy Commission, and payment procedures.
Asaase News is learning that traders are expected to make an initial payment of 50%, followed by subsequent payments of 25% each. KCML will establish a dedicated bank account to facilitate these payments.
The secretary of the Federation of Kumasi Traders, Ruben Ameh said the planned demonstration have been put on hold awaiting management to roll out the metering system.
“The work itself will take eight months. Management is expected to sign an MoU with the contractor and hopefully the board will also peruse it and we are good to go… Looking at how the KMA and other stakeholders are approaching the issues I believe the response will be positive.
“For instance, as we speak the water issue has since been resolved. We are still waiting for details of the fire report, too,” Ameh told Asaase Business.
“The assurance to our members is that since we have seen the seriousness and the speed with which authorities are working now we are looking forward to hold them to that,” he added.
It has been almost three years since the Kejetia traders started agitating for the installation of separate electricity meters.
Asaase Business recently reported that red bands were tied at vantage areas of the market to press home their demands.
Over 10,000 meters are expected to be installed at the market.
