Ghana plummets in FIFA rankings after disappointing AFCON performance

This is the Black Stars lowest ranking since September 2005

Ghana’s football team, the Black Stars, has experienced a significant drop in the latest FIFA Men’s World Ranking, dropping six places to 67th globally.

This decline marks Ghana’s lowest ranking since September 2005, following their underwhelming performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Côte d’Ivoire.

During the AFCON tournament, the Black Stars faced a dismal outcome, exiting the competition at the group stage for the second consecutive time. Despite their efforts, they failed to secure a single victory, managing only two points from three matches against Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.

As a consequence of this poor showing, Ghana now finds itself ranked 14th among African nations, trailing behind competitors like Cape Verde, the Democratic Republic (DR) of Congo, Burkina Faso, and South Africa.

Meanwhile, Morocco emerges as Africa’s leading team, holding the 12th position globally, closely followed by Senegal. Nigeria’s impressive journey to the AFCON Final propelled them up 14 places to 28th globally, securing the third spot in Africa.

Conversely, Egypt experienced a decline, slipping from 33rd to 36th in the world rankings and fourth on the African stage.

Côte d’Ivoire, the host and champions of the 2023 AFCON, showcased a commendable performance, ascending from 49th to 39th place in the global rankings, rounding up Africa’s top five nations.
