Laryea Kingston takes over as Ghana U17 coach

The former Black Stars winger has been tasked with assembling a formidable squad for the next edition of the WAFU B U-17 Cup of Nations, Accra 2024 and the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations

Former Ghana winger Laryea Kingston has been appointed head coach of the Black Starlets, the national U17 team, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed on Thursday (18 April).

Kingston, a familiar face in Ghanaian football with 42 international caps and appearances at the 2006 and 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), previously served as assistant coach to Abdul Karim Zito following their joint appointment in December 2022.

The 42-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the role, having enjoyed a successful playing career that spans 13 years across Russia, Scotland, the Netherlands, Israel, and Saudi Arabia. He’ll be supported by seasoned figures: former Hearts of Oak captain Jacob Nettey and Nana Agyemang.

Nettey, a hero in Ghanaian football history, led Accra Hearts of Oak to their historic CAF Champions League victory in 2000.

He also represented Ghana at the 2000 AFCON and the 1996 Summer Olympics. During his playing days, Nettey amassed an impressive trophy haul with Hearts of Oak, winning six Premier League titles and three FA Cups.

Agyemang, a holder of both the CAF Licence A and UEFA Licence B qualifications, brings a wealth of coaching experience from his time with clubs like Adenta United, Barbarossa Academy, Lizzy Sports Complex Academy, and ProGen Football Club.

The newly formed technical team has a clear mission: to build a formidable Black Starlets squad. Their immediate challenge is to assemble a team ready to compete in the upcoming WAFU B U-17 Cup of Nations, hosted by Accra in 2024, and ultimately, the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
