Remembering anti-apartheid activist and photojournalist, Peter Magubane

Peter Magubane, the South African anti-apartheid activist, photojournalist and personal documentarian of Nelson Mandela after his release from prison, passed away on January 1st. His funeral is being held today.

“I wanted the world to see what is going on in South Africa. The only way to show the world was through pictures.”

He is known for capturing up to 40 years of essential moments of the apartheid era, going to great lengths to obtain them, and participating in activism. He has left behind a visual legacy, showcasing his skill, dedication and contribution towards ending apartheid.

President Cyril Ramaphosa gave a eulogy at his funeral. He states, “What we have, what Dr Peter Magubane has left behind, opens a window into life in South Africa that will be viewed, analysed, cited and studied for generations to come. ”

“Peter Magubane smuggled his cameras into bread, milk cartons and even bibles to escape punishment from authorities. Despite that, he suffered imprisonment, beatings and about 586 consecutive days in solitary confinement,” Ramaphosa said.

Magubane also published over 20 books, including more than two pictorial biographies of Nelson Mandela. He also won multiple awards, including but not limited to the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mother Jones Foundation in 1997.
