National Farmers Day 2018: Best farmer awardee dies ahead of event

One of the awardees of the 2018 National Farmers Day has diedwhilst attending the ceremony in Tamale.

Issah Nayawu, 46, was one of the award winners from the Volta Region who was to receive an award at the national event at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale today December 7, 2018.

His demise occurred on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, in Tamale after a short illness. He has since been buried in line with Islamic custom and tradition.

The deceased is from Jasikan in the Volta Region and died six days after arriving in Tamale for the awards ceremony.

The Chairman of the National Farmers Awards Winners, Mr. Davies Narh Korboe confirmed the death to the media in Tamale.

In a related development, The Chairman of the National Farmers Awards Winners, Mr Davies Narh Korboe has appealed to government to pay more attention to commercial farming in all policies and also support smallholder farmers to deal with the country’s food security problems.

This, he said will enable the country to achieve the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda and also enable commercial farmers to focus on industrialisation to help boost the country’s economy.

Speaking to Journalists at the durbar grounds of the 34th National Farmers’ Day celebration at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on the theme ‘Agriculture: Moving Ghana Beyond Aid”, Mr. Korboe intimated that given the needed support particularly feed for the poultry industry, that sector alone could transform the country from depending on aid to international trade thereby boosting the country ‘s economy.

“Agriculture is the game changer, hence the need for us to use agriculture to move Ghana to the next level. Apart from God and the air that we breath, the next most important thing is food”.
