National security commissions boreholes in Dodome Awuiasu

An opinion leader in the community, Gift Tsama, thanked the ministry and Asaase Radio on behalf of the chiefs and people of the community for the gesture

The human security directorate of the Ministry of National Security on Friday 26 May commissioned boreholes for residents of Dodome Awuiasu in the Ho West district of the Volta Region.

In April, residents of the community appealed for potable water through Asaase Radio at a mini durbar to climax this year’s Easter celebration.

A delegation from the directorate, led by Paa Kweku Baffoe – project coordinator –, visited the community to assess the situation on 18 April, making a commitment to support the locals.

Following that, the ministry swiftly mobilised resources to build a new mechanised borehole and repaired two manual ones for the community. It also repaired a mechanised borehole for the community’s health centre.

Speaking to Asaase News after a brief commissioning ceremony, Baffoe said, “since January this year, we’ve built about 60 boreholes [across the country] and we have a few more under construction.”Dodome Awuiasu/National security/Community development/water/SDG6/Sustainable Development Goal 6

The deputy director for National Counter Terrorism Fusion Centre of the ministry, Osei Bonsu, said the intervention is part of “our human security strategy. It is quite important that we assessed the situation and implemented this project… for the community. We are quite delighted about the result so far.”

Gratitude

An opinion leader in the community, Gift Tsama, thanked the ministry and Asaase Radio on behalf of the chiefs and people of the community.

He said “above all, national security’s intervention was so remarkable. We are grateful for the speed with which they came to this community, assessed the challenges we’re facing and resolved it.”

The right-wing chief of the paramount chief of Dodome Traditional Area, Togbe Blafo, said “we now have very clean drinking water. I’ll say a very big thank to Asaase Radio.”

He, however, appealed for a bigger tank to store enough water for distribution to the various clans in the community.

Children no longer have to trek long distances to fetch water before they go to school. A junior high school pupil, Dobi Cyril, said he used to go to school late every day because he had to trek for kilometers to get water from a stream every morning.

He is happy he does not have to do that anymore. He believes he can focus more on his education now. He said “with our new boreholes here now, we just walked a few metres from home this morning to fetch water. We were able to get to school early.”
