North East Region: Flood victims appeal for support

The torrential rains destroyed properties including backyard farms and washed away livestock and other valuables

Residents of Gaagbini in the West Mamprusi municipality are appealing for support following Sunday’s downpour, leaving majority of them displaced.

The torrential flood destroyed properties including backyard farms and washed away livestock and other valuables.

When Asaase News visited the community, some of the locals were compelled to transport their possessions and parked on the main Walewale-Nalerigu road while they waited for the water to recede.

The main road linking Walewale and Nalerigu became inaccessible after the road was dug to allow the free-flow of water in order not to cascade to other adjoining communities.

Yidana Zakaria, the North East Regional Minister, and Issahak Arimeyaw Basintale Somo Lucky, the chief executive of the West Mamprusi Municipality, gave the residents permission to split the Nalerigu-Gamba road in order to divert the flow of the cascading water and prevent it from harming nearby communities.

Five structures collapsed and were submerged in water, leaving the community chief, Naa Yidana Alhassan, and his family homeless. He is appealing to the government for support.

“I am appealing to the government to come and help the community with what they can. Over the last two years, the same flooding occurred here so I am begging the government to come and construct a big culvert for the community.

“I don’t have a room in my house to sleep in anymore. I am begging the government to come and help the community,” Naa Alhassan said.

Some of the residents who were also forced out of their homes by the floods told Asaase News that all their property had been washed away including foodstuff.

“Last year, the same flooding occurred here. Just this morning we woke up and the community was flooded. We are appealing to the government to at least come and construct the bridge for us. We are tired but when they construct the bridge, this similar incident will not happen again,” a resident said.
