North East Region: Windstorm forces pupils to study under trees, parents call for support

The situation has also forced some parents to take their children out of school

Pupils of the Frukan E/A Primary School at Langbinsi in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region have been forced to study under trees after a windstorm collapsed their school building months ago.

The six-unit classroom block containing primary one to primary six children was completely ripped off on 29 April 2023 by a windstorm which caused huge havoc in the Langbinsi community.

The situation has also forced some parents to take their children out of school.

Dauda Iddrisu, the head teacher of the school said the children are always compelled to change to a better sitting position due to the sunrays.

Moreso, the children will have to leave school and run to their various homes when it rains, Iddrisu added.

Before the destruction of the school, enrolment was 558 but the situation has compelled parents to withdraw their wards from the school.

Thirty-three pupils have so far left the school.

Iddrisu said, “The children are suffering. The trees are our classrooms for now. When it threatens to rain, we have no alternative but to allow the children to go home and this affects teaching and learning greatly.”

“The school has an enrolment of 558 and almost all the classes are sitting under the trees…”

The authorities of the school are appealing to the government and NGOs to come to their aid.

The assemblyman for the Langbinsi electoral area, Adam Kabiru has also implored Vice-President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia to support the school.

“We have appealed to the MCE on several occasions but nothing has been done. So, we are appealing to the Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to help us,” he said.
