NPP using police to intimidate Asawase NDC members – Muntaka alleges

The MP for Asawase in the Ashanti Region, Muntaka Mubarak, is alleging that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is using personnel of the Anti-Robbery Unit of the Ghana Police Service to intimidate National Democratic Congress (NDC) members in the constituency.

Mubarak, who doubles as the minority chief whip in Parliament, has also accused the police in the Ashanti Region of being bias, citing a number of unfolding events in the constituency.

He was addressing journalists on Thursday (29 October 2020), following the arrest of 10 members of the opposition NDC at his office over the weekend.

A member of the group, Awudu Sulley, also known as ‘Scorpion’ and two others have since been remanded by a Kumasi Circuit Court on Tuesday.

Muntaka, who was unhappy about the developments in the Asawase constituency, recounted how the police unit has allegedly been used to intimidate NDC supporters ahead of the elections.

“As you may already know, there was a swoop in this office after we have returned from a mini rally and 10 of our young men were arrested. And the unfortunate thing is that we secured bail for nine of them with the exception of Awudu Sulley alias Scorpion,” the lawmaker pointed out.

“Awudu Sulley is a responsible man, we know him, we find this very disturbing, obviously we are law abiding citizens and we will be the last to obstruct the police from doing their legitimate work.”

The Asawase MP has, however, vowed to summon the interior minister, Ambrose Dery, to parliament over the operations of the unit in the coming days.

As a hot spot, the two main political parties have signed a memorandum of understanding to ensure peace ahead of the 2020 general elections in the Asawase Constituency of the Ashanti Region.
