Obetsebi-Lamptey Roundabout closed to traffic

The Ministry of Roads and Highways says the roundabout will be closed between 10pm and 6am daily until 1 October 2020

The Obetsebi-Lamptey Roundabout has been closed until 1 October 2020. This is to give contractors time to begin construction of the interchange project.

The closure of the busy roundabout was announced in a statement from the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

The ministry said the road contractor, QGMI Construcciones e Infraestructuras Globales, will launch “metallic beams for the construction of the interchange”.

The ministry said traffic will, therefore, be diverted and motorists are “to follow the directional signages that will be placed at vantage points on the approaches to the roundabout”.

Redevelopment

In October 2019, President Akufo-Addo cut the sod for construction work on the Obetsebi-Lamptey Interchange to begin.

The project is one of four interchanges that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is building across the country.

The redevelopment of Obetsebi-Lamptey Circle is to help ease traffic congestion on that route, which links Kaneshie, Graphic Road, the Nkrumah Interchange and Abossey Okai.

Phase one of the project consists of a two-tier interchange with storm drains and culverts beneath the Graphic Road.

The second phase will see the widening of the road into a three-lane dual carriageway with provision for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) facilities.

The project will also ensure the widening of the Nii Teiko Din (Prampram junction) roads into dual carriage lanes, while the Awudome Cemetery and Kaneshie Market terminal will also see expansions.

Reduce flooding

The construction of the Obetsebi-Lamptey Interchange is expected to cost approximately US$39 million.

When completed, critical drainage structures will be upgraded to mitigate the usual flooding of the roundabout area whenever it rains.

A statement issued by the Roads Ministry during the sod-cutting said: “The ground level will have a remodelled roundabout, whilst the second tier will be an east-to-west flyover linking the Graphic Road to the Kanashie-Mallam road.

“The third tier will be north-to-south flyover on the Ring Road West, which will link the Ring Road from the Royal Chapel Church to the Central Mosque at Abossey Okai.

“Critical drainage structures that go through the roundabout will be upgraded under this project to reduce the incidence of flooding in the area,” the statement said.
