Ofori-Boadu: Ghana’s affirmative action bill not worth passing into law

The affirmative action bill seeks equal representation and participation of women and men in governance, in public positions of power, and in all decision-making spaces of the country

Gloria Ofori-Boadu, the managing legal practitioner of GOB Law Consult, has said Ghana’s affirmative action bill cannot be passed in its “current state”.

The affirmative action bill seeks equal representation and participation of women and men in governance, in public positions of power, and in all decision-making spaces of the country.

It also requires all sectors of the economy to reserve a percentage of the employment they offer for women.

Ridiculous state

Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (3 August), Ofori-Boadu described the current state of the bill as ridiculous.

“The bill is absolutely as at now ridiculous,” she said. “I don’t want to talk about it. I don’t think it is worth passing, I think that we should go step by step, we should read the bill [and] educate the population about the bill.”

“…The AU has mandated countries after a certain period, to ensure that there is a 50-50 representation in all level of public life. The AU has started the process, and the mandate was that after 15 countries have signed onto the charter and have had their Parliament to ratify then automatically it’s applicable to African states.

“After all these years, more than 15 have signed and had their Parliaments ratify including Ghana, so if you look at 50 and now we are talking of 20 and 10% and progressing, I find that to be absolutely ridiculous,” Ofori-Boadu said.
