Okyenhene expresses disappointment in police over handling of Adoagyiri issue

He said it is concerning that the Inspector General of Police is unable to require the parties involved in the Adoagyiri chieftaincy impasse to provide written evidence of ownership

The  Okyenhene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin has expressed disappointment at the police in Nsawam over the alleged poor handling of the Adoagyiri impasse.

The impasse led to the death of some young people almost a year ago.

He said it is concerning that the IGP is unable to require the parties involved in the Adoagyiri chieftaincy impasse to provide written evidence of ownership.

“We want peace so if the IGP wants to know the truth they should come and ask the traditional authorities and not the police at Nsawam,” he said.

The Okyenhene was speaking at Kyebi in the Eastern Region when the Chief of Adoagyiri Zongo, Chief Bashiru Salifu Mamman Taylor, led the Zongo Chiefs to pay a courtesy call on him.

The Chiefs of Adoagyiri Zongo were in Ofori Panin fie to reaffirm their allegiance to Okyeman and the Okyenhene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin.

Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin said the Police Commander at Nsawam has no power to determine the overlord of Adoagyiri.

“Adoagyiri at all times belongs to Okyenhene and we are not ready to cede an inch of Adoagyiri to any group of persons. The customary practice in Okyeman applies in Adoagyiri and shall remain the same,” he said.

Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin hinted at their intentions to go to court for a declaration on the ownership of Adoagyiri.

Okyehene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin indicated that the Ofori Panie fie is a house of records and that almost all transactions and dealings that border on Okyeman are documented.

The chief of the Zongo community at Adoagyiri, Bashiru Salifu Mamman Taylor, said his great grandfather, who became Zongo chief in 1915, served the then Adoagyiri chief Barima Adu Korkor ll and attended meetings together at the Ofori Panie fie.

He indicated that the Zongo community has stayed out of the controversies about whether Adoagyiri belongs to the Kotokuman or Okyeman for a very good reason.

However, staunch Muslims who believe in the truth need to indicate which traditional council offered them a place to settle in Adoagyiri.

Chief Bashiru Salifu Mamman Taylor added that the relationship between the Zongo chiefs and the Ofori Panie fie predates the current generation.

He said the record speaks for itself that, at all times, the Zongo chiefs dealt with Barimah Adu Korkor ll, whose allegiance was with the Ofori Panin fie.
