One dies in Amansie mining site clash

The deceased, Elijah Timenkeh, 34, joined the teeming youth who invaded the mining concession of Adubiaho Mining Company to prospect for gold

Security has been beefed up in the Amansie South District town of Manso Keniago after workers of a mining firm and some irate youth clashed resulting in the death of one person.

The deceased, Elijah Timenkeh, 34, joined the teeming youth who invaded the mining concession of Adubiaho Mining Company to prospect for gold.

He was, however, hit by a bullet when security guards at the mining firm fired shots in an attempt to disperse the illegal miners.

The police in the Ashanti Region have confirmed a Chinese national who was also shot in the process is receiving treatment at the St Martin’s Catholic Hospital in nearby Agroyesum.

The police spokesperson ASP Godwin Ahianyo said the reinforcement in the town is to maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, the government has deployed river guards to patrol water bodies that have been destroyed by illegal mining.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources which is spearheading the operation is partnering licensed small-scale miners as the country renews efforts to enforce mining laws.

A deputy Minister for the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, at the inauguration of an anti-galamsey taskforce by the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners in Kumasi warned that the government would be tougher on illegal miners.
