PARDA promotes adolescent SRHR in West Mamprusi

PARDA works in ten communities in West Mamprusi to empower young people and enhance their access to information and services on SRHR

A Ghanaian non-governmental organisation, Participatory Action for Rural Development Alternatives (PARDA), has organised community durbars in Gbimsi and Zangum in the West Mamprusi municipality to educate girls and young women between ten and 24 years on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), gender-based violence, sexually transmitted infections and family life skills.

PARDA, with funding from Oxfam Ghana, works in eight municipalities across the country. The organisation works in ten communities in the West Mamprusi municipality to empower young people and enhance their access to information and services on SRHR.

The durbars were held on Monday 29 May.

A coordinator from Oxfam Ghana’s “Power to Choose” project, Fauziatu Abdul Rahman, said, “The aim is to ensure that the young people have access to information and services on SRHR.

“The services will be supported through Ghana Health Service and so, we will support Walewale health centre with health equipment, train the healthcare service providers and support them to provide the needed services to these young people.

“This will be done through PARDA. Mostly, we target in-school children through school clubs. We also engage those who are out of school.”

The assemblyman for Gbimsi electoral area, Iddi Jonah Salifu, said “through this programme, parents appreciate their role in guiding children, especially teenagers, and young people to live their lives well. Basically, the programme has been a great success and benefitted the community.”

Healthcare service providers at the Walewale health centre were also educated on how to engage young girls when they visit the facility.
