Passage of anti-gay bill flies in the face of democracy, says Prof Gadzekpo
The bill, passed on Wednesday is set to criminalise the promotion, advocacy, funding and acts of homosexuality
The board chair of the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Audrey Gadzekpo has said the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill (anti-LGBTQ+) by Parliament flies in the face of the country’s democracy.
The bill, passed on Wednesday (28 February) is set to criminalise the promotion, advocacy, funding and acts of homosexuality.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (29 February), Gadzekpo said criminalising people due to their identified gender is unconstitutional.
“I am opposed to the bill as an individual and the coalition that I belong to is opposed to the bill also because we just think flies in the face of our democracy because we are a circular country that is guided by a constitution,” she said.
“And the Constitution is the supreme law of the land and that constitution says there should be no discrimination. So criminalising people because of their identified gender is against the Constitution.”
“Do you think that those 275 people in Parliament can account for the way of life of all citizens in Ghana? I don’t think so, who decides our way of life? We saw parliamentarians fighting and snatching ballot boxes, is it our way of life? …” Gadzekpo asked.
