Police to use body cameras to crack down on “okada” riders

The Police Action Against Rider Indiscipline (PAARI) initiative will deploy a team of police riders with body cameras to monitor the conduct of okada motorbike riders

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has rolled out an initiative to check indiscipline on Ghana’s roads, especially by motorcycle users.

The move comes after Professor Alex Dodoo, the director general of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), reported that roughly 50% of road crashes in Ghana can be attributed to commercial motorbikes, popularly the ones known as “okadas“.

Under the banner of Police Action Against Rider Indiscipline (PAARI), the initiative will deploy a team of police riders with body cameras to monitor the conduct of riders at major intersections and strategic locations in the country and to arrest those found flouting traffic regulations.

A statement issued by the police published on Thursday (8 April 2022) said the initiative will be rolled out in phases.
