Police officer, KNUST student accused of rape denied bail again

The two persons on Tuesday, (19 July)  allegedly took turns and forcibly raped the first-year student at a hostel at Bomso, according to a police statement

The Asokore Mampong District Court has for the second time remanded the two suspects who allegedly gang-raped a first-year female student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

His Worship Boabin Quansah, who presided over the case, held that his court did not have the jurisdiction to grant bail to the accused persons.

The police officer and the KNUST final year student, have been charged with two counts; conspiracy to commit rape and rape.

The suspects Joel Osei Owusu and Lance Corporal Frank Adu Poku were denied bail the first time they appeared before the court on 28 July 2022, were for the second time denied bail.

In an interview with Asaase News, the head of the Ashanti Regional legal and prosecutions, ACP Kofi Blagodzi who argued for the suspects to be remanded said that “the Attorney General is very much aware about the public interest, so they are also working very speedily to come into seam with the committal proceedings.”

Although the police officer involved has been interdicted, ACP Kofi Blagodzi said he is informed by the lawyer for the university that the school is following due processes to get the student suspended.

The case has been adjourned to 23 August 2022.
