The manager of supergroup Destiny’s Child, Mathew Knowles, has said everyone, regardless of professional background, must learn the basics of entrepreneurship to build a successful career.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nana Yaa Mensah on the Thursday (26 October) edition of the Asaase Breakfast Show in Accra, the talent manager suggested that entrepreneurship must be introduced to every student, especially from the high school level.

“Every student should take entrepreneurship as a course and even earlier in high school,” Knowles, the father of popstars Beyoncé and Solange, said. “Even if you’re a doctor, you’re still an entrepreneur and must learn the basics.”

The music executive and public speaker called on young entrepreneurs to take education seriously because it is “a powerful tool” that opens more doors.

“Education is key. Lack of education is what brings about poverty,” Knowles said. “Knowledge is power. When you are in poverty your intellect is somehow different because you don’t have the knowledge to really comprehend somethings. Without that then you’ll live in a different world.”

He also called on young entrepreneurs to always get “the fundamentals right” in order to stay in business and avoid unnecessary challenges.

“Most of the times we don’t have the fundamentals right and that is why we fail. Make sure that the team understands the fundamentals,” Knowles added. “Building the right team, the right attorney for contracts, having the right accountant for the right banking relationship is key.”

“Successful people don’t wait, they make things happen,” he said.

Knowles, an American record executive is in Ghana as a speaker at the To The Top seminar in Accra on 27 October 2023.

Slated for the Cedi Conference Centre at the University of Ghana, the seminar forms part of precursor activities for the inaugural two-day Eat Drink Music (EDM) Festival at the Untamed Empire in Accra.

Knowles is best known as the manager of Destiny’s Child and father of popstars Beyoncé and Solange. In 2020, Nigerian music streaming platform MePlaylist appointed Knowles president of global marketing and communications after he invested an unconfirmed amount in the service through his company Music World Entertainment.

Knowles is a global leader, as a music executive, entrepreneur and lecturer. He is the manager of Destiny’s Child and the father of the musical sensations Beyoncé and Solange.

On his first ever visit to Ghana, Knowles will speak to young entrepreneurs about the business side of being creative.
